Hofstra’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) both host activities throughout the year such as career panels and networking events. Students also have the opportunity to become members of professional and academic organizations that further the school’s diversity goals. Many participants receive a stipend for their summer intensive. The school’s diversity initiatives include the Women’s Summer Program in Computing/Engineering (W-SPiCE) program, in which first-year female students participate in specialized summer projects, engage with STEM- focused companies, and network with women executives in STEM careers. The most effective solutions come from a collaboration of different mindsets, backgrounds, and experiences.” “Engineers of all kinds are problem-solvers. “With STEM jobs growing at such a high rate, it’s important to have a qualified workforce that is representative of the population,” said David Rooney, associate dean for the DeMatteis School. Dean Rabbany also has signed ASEE’s “Dean’s Diversity Pledge,” to improve representation in engineering and applied science at the undergraduate and graduate-levels. The DeMatteis School fields several programs designed to recruit and retain students from underrepresented backgrounds, and has posted a statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion on the website. The ASEE first recognized the DeMatteis School’s DEI efforts in 2020. The Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science was recognized for its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), which renewed the school’s bronze level award for a new three-year term.
